In 60 AD, Boudicca rose up in furious revolt, quicklygathering an army bent¹ on vengeance². With the cream of the Roman troops tieddown suppressing an insurgency³ in north Wales, Boudicca's army marched towardsthe place which most symbolised the now-hated Roman colonisation of Britain,Colchester. It helped that it was lightly garrisoned⁴. After a firestorm marchthrough eastern England, burning Roman settlements one by one, it was thecity's turn.
