V: Mother wanted to come with me when I told her it was to meet a critic¹, but I got away in the carriage². That's perfect. Nobody will even see your husband.

E: I've told Duchemin's keeper³ to keep him out till a quarter past. I've set a place for your Gertie, but never mind. We've got the old curate's sister staying with us, Miss Fox, and she's stone deaf! So an empty chair next to her makes no difference.

Butler: This way! The ladies will be in here! We arrived together! He-he! 

Mac: Miss... Good morning. I'm Macmaster.

Butler: We're living in a state of siege⁴, ladies. Tee-hee!

E: It's so good of you to come.

C: Pleasure, thank you for having me. Christopher Tietjens.

E: A pleasure indeed⁵ and you must be the famous Vincent Macmaster. A pleasure, ma'am. I'm Edith Duchemin and this is Miss Wannop!

Mac: Ah, Miss Wannop! Gentlemen, you must be tired from your journey⁶. Let me show you to your seats.
