He was also fascinated by technology, and collected all sorts of scientific instruments.
This looks like an exquisite1 miniature Roman temple, but it's actually an astronomical2 clock. Made for George III, to be displayed here at Buckingham House. George III loved science, and he loved gadgets3, so this is perfect for him, because in its way it's trying to measure life, the universe and everything. Here, for example, you've got a 24-hour clock, and then in the centre, cities around the world, so you can see the different times in those cities. And then round here, we've got a map of the heavens, as seen above London. On this side, we've got a tidal dial which shows high and low tides, at ports not just around Britain, but around the world. And then finally, here we've got the solar system and the planets, such as they were known at the time, with the Sun at the centre.
