Famous Teddy Bears 著名的玩具熊 Paddington, Winnie the Pooh and Rupert the Bear – enter the world of the teddy bear! So we’re looking at some of the bears of the Teddy Bear Museum collection at Polka Theatre. The first part of the collection is a stage with Rupert, Paddington and several other bears. Hello, I’m Marina Campbell and I help look after the teddy bear collection. I think most people have had a bear that they’ve loved at some point and have read stories or have watched television programmes about them and they’re just part of growing up and part of our heritage1. What’s amazing coming here is that so many generations of people recognise the same bear, particularly Paddington. So Mums and Dads are “Ooh, it’s Paddington” but also very young children recognise him and are very excited about seeing him. What Marina enjoys about working at the Museum is that lots of people across the generations all recognise and love teddy bears. The first teddy bear was made in 1902 after the American President, Teddy Roosevelt, was out hunting one day and they couldn’t find any bears for him to shoot on this hunt but they did find a bear cub2. And they tied this bear cub to a tree but Teddy Roosevelt said “No, spare the bear” and then a toy-maker decided3 this was a very good story and that he would make a ‘Teddy’s’ bear. Well, you see the interesting thing about Rupert is that Rupert is not a bear. If you look very closely4 Rupert is a boy but with a bear’s head. He is not a real bear and we do not have any Ruperts on display.
