Jack1 the Giant Slayer2 is a 2013 American fantasy adventure film based on the fairy tales, "Jack the Giant Killer3" and "Jack and the Beanstalk". The film stars Nicholas Hoult and Ewan McGregor. The film tells the story of Jack, a young farmhand who must rescue a princess from a race of giants after accidentally opening a gateway4 to their world. The official Warner Bros. site says: "Unleashed5 on the Earth for the first time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim6 the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack (Nicholas Hoult), into the battle of his life to stop them.…He comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors7 he thought only existed in legend… and gets the chance to become a legend himself."
Jack the Giant Slayer has received a mixed response from film critics. The film received a 53% approval rating on the review website, Rotten Tomatoes, which wrote: "It's enthusiastically acted and reasonably fun, but Jack the Giant Slayer is also overwhelmed by its digital effects and a story so middle-of-the-road as to be a bit bland8 and impersonal9." Conversely, Richard Roeper of the 'Chicago Sun-Times' said, "Jack the Giant Slayer is a rousing, original and thoroughly10 entertaining adventure." The flick11 didn't bring in as much cash as expected at the box office. The 'Hollywood Reporter' estimated that the film was on track to lose between $125 million and $140 million.
