Psycho is a 1960 American suspense¹ and horror film directed by Alfred Hitchcock. It stars Anthony Perkins and Janet Leigh. The screenplay, by Joseph Stefano, is based on the 1959 novel of the same name by Robert Bloch. The novel was loosely inspired by the crimes of Wisconsin murderer and grave robber Ed Gein, who lived just 40 miles from Bloch. The film depicts² the encounter between a secretary, Marion Crane (Leigh), who goes to a secluded³ motel after stealing money from her employer, and the motel's disturbed owner and manager, Norman Bates (Perkins), and the aftermath of their meeting. The movie is famous for the shower scene, which is described as one of the most chilling in movie history.

 

Psycho was initially⁴ criticized for making other filmmakers more willing to show gore⁵ and initially received mixed reviews. However, outstanding box office sales led to it getting four Academy Award nominations⁶. Psycho is now considered one of Hitchcock's best films and is highly praised as a work of cinematic art by international critics. It is often ranked among the greatest films of all time and is famous for bringing in a new level of acceptable violence and sexuality in films. The public loved the film, with lines stretching outside of theatres as people had to wait for the next showing. It broke box-office records in Japan, China and the rest of Asia, France, Britain and South America.
