This is AP News Minute. 1. In a stunning¹ move, house majority leader Kevin McCarthy has withdrawn² his candidacy for speaker, and the election for the position has been postponed³. Republican lawmaker said McCarthy told colleagues at the start of the GOP conference he was not the right person for the job. 2. A US airman who helped thwart⁴ a French train attack is in a California hospital after being stabbed in Sacramento. An Air Force spokesman said the airman first-class Spencer Stone is in stable condition and that the attack was being handled by local law enforcement. 3. Volkswagen’s top US executive has apologized for the emission⁵ related scandal engulfing⁶ the automaker. Volkswagen American CEO Michael Horn told a House subcommittee his company’s admission of rigging diesel⁷ cars to bypass emission test was ‘deeply troubling’.

4. And in China, tourism officials are closing a newly opened glass walkway in central China after cracks appeared in the structure. The closure happened at the height of the weeklong National Day holiday.
