 　　Exercise 1-7:

　　Individual Practice

　　Practice saying the sentences after the suggestion and the beep tone¹.

　　You will be given only a short time in which to reply so that you won't have the leisure² to overthink.

　　Start speaking as soon as you hear the tone because I'll be saying the sentence only a few seconds later.

　　1. Convey³ the information that it really does sound as if rain is falling.

　　2. Convey the opinion that although it has the sound of rain, it may be something else.

　　3. Convey the different feelings that someone has about rain and snow.

　　4. Convey the fact that rain is an impossibility right now.

　　Pause⁴ the CD.

　　Practice the four sentences on your own ten times.

　　Once you're familiar with moving the stress around and feeling how the meaning changes, turn the CD on to continue with the next exercise.

1 tone   

n.语气，音调，气度，色调；vt.（up）增强

参考例句：

• There was a tone of mockery in his voice.他说话的语气含有嘲笑的意味。
• Holmes used an informal,chatty tone in his essays.霍姆斯在文章中语气轻松随便。

2 leisure   

n.空闲时间，空暇；悠闲，安逸

参考例句：

• I am seldom at leisure.我很少有空。
• He read books at his leisure.他在空闲时读一些书。

3 convey   

vt.传送；运送，输送；传达，表达，传播

参考例句：

• Don't forget to convey my regards when you see him.你去见着他，别忘了给我捎个好儿。
• My letter will convey some idea of my mode of life.我的信将使你了解到一些我的生活方式。

4 pause   

vi.暂停，中止，停顿；n.中止，停顿，踌躇，休止符

参考例句：

• After a little pause, he went on with his speech.稍停一会儿后，他又继续讲演。
• He made a pause and then went on reading.他停顿了一下，然后又读下去。
