President Obama says a proposal to place Syrian chemical weapons under international control to avoid US military strikes could be a potential breakthrough. Linda Fasulo, reports he also says it's time for the council to act swiftly if UN inspectors5 conclude the chemical weapons were used in Syria on August 21st.
Ban stressed that the security council members must unite to respond to any use of chemical weapons and that there must be universal condemnation6. He made clear that he would call on the council to demand that Syria immediately transfer its chemical weapons and the chemicals used in making those weapons to a safe place inside Syria where they would be destroyed under international supervision7. The UN chief also noted8 that Syria would have to agree to the arrangement. For NPR News, Linda Fasulo in New York.
