This is Scientific Americans 60-second science. I am Karen Hopkin. It will take just a minute.
Thanks for the Wifi we can watch TV, play games and check email from the comfort of the couch. And soon we maybe able to repurpose our Wifi signals so we can turn off the coffeemaker or turn on the TV with simple flick1 of the finger from anywhere in the house. Researchers describe their system called Wisee at the International Conference on Mobile Computing2 and Networking. The idea is similar in concept the X-box kernet which uses cameras to recognize the game players movements and translate them into onscreen. But Wisee works without cameras instead it uses the ambient wireless3 signals put out by our smart phones, laptops, routers and tablets. When we move we alter the pattern of these Wifi signals, the Wisee receivers detected those disturbances4 and interpret the motions that caused them like waving or swinging your fists. Of 900 guster tested Wisee could identified 94%. The users resigned the particular motion to specific gadget5 the motion does not have to be the one work in the real world. So if all goes well, you may actually be able to pouch6 the lights out.
Thanks for the minute. For Scientific Americans 60-second science. I am Karen Hopkin.
