I'm Naamua Delaney at the CNN Center in Atlanta. Here's a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke made a key appearance before a Congressional Committee earlier in Washington. He told lawmakers he supports an economic stimulus1 package aimed at avoiding a rapid slowdown if it's temporary and quickly implemented2. President Bush also backs measures to shore up the economy.
A powerful Democrat3 in Congress is reportedly ready to endorse4 Senate Barack Obama 's bid for the White House. Three Democratic sources say Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy will back Obama. Leahy chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee which reviews nominees5 to the Federal bench and the Supreme6 Court.
Some scaring moment today at London's Heathrow Airport. A British Airways7 jet with 152 people on board landed short of the runway, skidding8 on grass until it reached the tarmac. All the passengers on the flight from Beijing were evacuated9 on emergency slides. At least three people were treated for minor10 injuries. The incident caused major delays of the airport.
Police in suburban11 Atlanta have made a second arrest in yesterday's deadly ambush12 of two police officers. Investigators13 are looking for at least one more person. The off-duty officers were gunned down while walking security at an apartment complex in a high crime neighborhood in DeKalb County. The first man was arrested last night. The second suspect was taken into custody14 this morning. Both are charged with two counts of murder. The police chief is appealing to the public for information about the officers' killings15.
O.J. Simpson is out of jail after posting bond early this morning. He had been behind bars since Friday. Simpson was accused of violateing the terms of his bail16 by trying to contact a co-defendant about the alleged17 memorabilia heist they face trial for. The judge in Las Vegas doubled Simpson's bail to $ 250,000 and demanded him not to be released until 15% of it was paid. Simpson and two others will be back in court April 7th.
