Good afternoon I'm Naamua Delaney at the CNN Center in Atlanta. Here's a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
If you are flying on American or Delta1 today, do yourself a favor and check the status of your flight before you leave home. Both airlines are canceling flights while they inspect the wiring in some of their jets. Delta has canceled about 3% of its flights worldwide, or about 275 flights. American has canceled 132 flights. Yesterday American canceled 325 flights. The cancellations were prompted by an FAA audit2 and safety concerns about how wiring on certain aircraft was secured.
Drug smugglers are still on the loose, but their cargo3 is in the hands of authorities. The coast guard retrieved4 more than 3000 pounds of cocaine5 that smugglers dumped into the waters off the coast of Florida. The smugglers unloaded bales of the cocaine as authorities pursued their boat. They escaped capture despite shots from a helicopter.
Shiite neighborhoods in Baghdad are bearing the scars of battle. For three straight days, Iraqi forces have fought with armed militias6 who say they are being unfairly targeted and pressured by the government. More than 100 people have been killed in street clashes not only in Baghdad but in Shiite populated areas such as Basra, Kut and Kabul.
The FBI has indicted7 a governor of Puerto Rico. Governor Aníbal Acevedo Vilá is charged with 19 counts in connection with a campaign finance probe. The charges include conspiracy8 to violate US federal campaign laws and giving false testimony9 to the FBI. Acevedo is a super delegate to the Democratic Convention and has pledged his support to Barack Obama. He was elected governor in 2004 after campaigning on an anti-corruption platform.
Big changes could be in store for the next presidential race, if Democratic Florida Senator Bill Nelson gets his way. Nelson says presidential primaries all to be clumped10 into regions, which will take turns being first. It wouldn't solve this year's problems with Nelson's home state and Michigan. Both those Democratic primaries apparently11 won't count because they happen too early. Nelson says 6 regional primaries will give large and small states a more equal say in choosing a president.
Well, those are the headlines this hour. Stay with CNN for more on these stories and the other news of the day.
