Good afternoon from the CNN Center in Atlanta, I’m Naamua Delaney. Thanks for checking in with us. Here’s a look at what’s happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
A devastating1 earthquake in central China: the Chinese government says 50 bodies have been pulled from a collapsed2 school where 900 children are buried. Chinese state media also says between three and five thousand people are feared dead in one county alone. The death toll3 is expected to rise as more bodies are found. The deadly quake hit central China this morning with a magnitude estimated at 7.8.
Myanmar has given the US permission to send two more planes for the humanitarian4 supplies. The cargo5 will be similar to the first US government aid flight that landed there this morning. Health experts warn a million and a half people are at a risk for diarrhea, pneumonia6, and malaria7 without clean water and sanitation8. Even though Myanmar is allowing aid cargo to be flown in, it is still banning aid workers from entering the country.
Twenty two people are confirmed dead after tornadoes9 tore through three states this weekend. Oklahoma and Missouri bore the worst of it. Six people died in Picher Oklahoma. Fourteen are dead in Missouri, and 2 in Georgia. So far, tornadoes have killed 98 people in the US this year, making it the deadliest year in a decade.
And another record for the price of gas, the sixth straight increase according to AAA. The new national average for a gallon of self-serve regular is 3.72. That’s up 35 cents in the past months and up from 3.06 last year.
All right, dig out your pennies if you are heading to the post-office today. A first-class stamp will now cost you 42 cents that’s up a penny. The US Postal10 Service says the price high follows a low mail volume and high fuel cost that caused a 700-million-dollar loss in the second quarter.
Well, it’s a quick look at what is making news this hour. Stay with CNN for more on these stories and the other news of the day.
