Good afternoon, everyone. I'm Creshon Saunders at the CNN.com newsroom in Atlanta. Here is a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
In Knoxville, Tennessee, seven people are hospitalized with gunshot wounds after a man opened fire at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church. A man apparently1 entered the building during a children's summer theater production and reportedly fired more than a dozen times. A Knoxville Fire Department spokesman says all the victims appeared to be adults. There are reports congregation members overpowered the shooter and held him for police. The shooter is now in custody2.
Officials in India have detained 30 people following a series of bomb blasts in the western city of Ahmedabad that killed at least 49 people and wounded more than 100. Indian media report that a little-known group called India Mujahedeen is claiming responsibility.
Wind and surf are already building(=developing) as Taiwan braces3 for Typhoon Fung Wong. Forecasters say the typhoon is picking up momentum4 as it pinwheels toward the island. It's expected to make landfall early Monday morning.
Alright, Carlos Sastre has won the Tour de France. The 33-year-old Spaniard rolled down the Champs Elysees in Paris on a largely ceremonial ride. He had assured himself of victory Saturday when he finished the penultimate stage with an insurmountable lead. Despite that his 58-second margin5 of victory is the second closest finish in the 105-year-old race. Sastre also is one of the oldest first-time winners of the cycling's premier6 event.
To the movies now. "The Dark Knight7" continues to dominate the box office and set records while it's doing it. The latest Batman installment8 pulled in almost, get this, 76 million dollars this weekend, pushing it past the 300-million-dollar mark in just ten days. That's six days faster than the previous record holder9: "Pirates of the Caribbean, Dead Man's Chest". The Will Ferrell comedy "Step Brothers" had a stronger than expected opening weekend, coming in second with 30 million dollars, while not many believed in the X-Files sequel which came in a disappointing fourth place with 10 million bucks10.
Those are the headlines this hour. For more on these stories and other news of the day, CNN is your source online, on TV, even when you're on the go.
