 Chapter 10. The Guardian¹ of the Gate 第10章来到奥芝国

It was some time before the Cowardly Lion awakened², for he had lain among the poppies a long while, breathing in their deadly fragrance³;  胆小鬼本来在花丛中睡了许久，过了好久，它才从醉人的香气中清醒过来；

but when he did open his eyes and roll off the truck he was very glad to find himself still alive. 但是狮子睁开眼睛，从卡车上滚下，发现自己还活着，他感到很愉快。

"I ran as fast as I could," he said, sitting down and yawning,  “我竭尽全力快速奔跑，”它说着，坐起来，打着呵欠，

"the flowers were too strong for me. How did you get me out?" “花的香气太浓了，还是把我醉倒了。你们怎么可能把我救出来呢？”

Then they told him of the field mice, and how they had generously saved him from death;  于是他们告诉他，是田鼠们，如何勇敢地把它从死亡里解救出来；

and the Cowardly Lion laughed, and said: 小胆狮大笑着说：

"I have always thought myself very big and terrible;  “我总以为，自己是庞然大物，看起来很恐怖，

yet such little things as flowers came near to killing⁴ me,  却因细微的花儿，差点儿性命难保，

and such small animals as mice have saved my life. How strange it all is!  又被弱小的田鼠救了出来，这个世界真奇怪呀！

But, comrades, what shall we do now?" 伙伴们，现在我们要做什么？”

"We must journey on until we find the road of yellow brick again," said Dorothy,  多萝茜说：“我们必须走了，走回那黄砖路，”

"and then we can keep on to the Emerald City." “这样我们才能到那翡翠城去。”

So, the Lion being fully⁵ refreshed, and feeling quite himself again,  因此狮子听了，振作精神，重新站了起来，

they all started upon the journey, greatly enjoying the walk through the soft, fresh grass;  它和大家一起出发，在柔软而新鲜的草地上，快活地走着；

and it was not long before they reached the road of yellow brick and turned again toward the Emerald City where the Great Oz dwelt. 不久，他们走上了黄砖路，在朝着伟大的奥芝所住的翡翠城走去。

The road was smooth and well paved, now, and the country about was beautiful,  现在，路不那么难走了，宽阔而平坦，周围的景色也更加迷人了，

so that the travelers rejoiced in leaving the forest far behind, and with it the many dangers they had met in its gloomy shades.  他们暗自庆幸，逃离了那个可怕的森林，他们在阴暗处遇到了很多危险。

Once more they could see fences built beside the road;  他们又一次看到了路边建起的栅栏；

but these were painted green, and when they came to a small house, in which a farmer evidently lived, that also was painted green.  他们发现，这里所有的房子都漆着绿色，当他们来到一座小房子的时候，一个农民住在里面，他的房屋也被漆成绿色。

They passed by several of these houses during the afternoon, and sometimes people came to the doors and looked at them as if they would like to ask questions;  下午他们经过了几所房子，有时人们来到门口看着他们，好像他们想问问题一样。

but no one came near them nor spoke⁶ to them because of the great Lion, of which they were very much afraid.  但没有一个人走近他们，也没有和他们说话，因为他们非常害怕巨大的狮子。

The people were all dressed in clothing of a lovely emerald-green color and wore peaked hats like those of the Munchkins. 人们都穿着可爱的翠绿色的衣服和像芒奇金人戴着的尖顶帽子。

1 guardian
