 Something of the salt sea yet lingered in old Bildad's language, heterogeneously¹ mixed with Scriptural and domestic phrases.  比勒达的口音中夹杂着水手腔、家乡土语和《圣经》上的话，显得有几分刺耳。 

Avast there, avast there, Bildad, avast now spoiling our harpooneer, cried Peleg.  行啦，比勒达，别念叨啦，别再糟蹋我们这位优秀的标枪手了！法勒船长显然有自己的看法，他接着说： 

Pious² harpooneers never make good voyagers—it takes the shark out of 'em; no harpooneer is worth a straw who aint pretty sharkish.  标枪手虔诚起来可不是什么好事，他会丧失胆量的！而一个没有胆量的标枪手是一文不值的。 

There was young Nat Swaine, once the bravest boat-header out of all Nantucket and the Vineyard; he joined the meeting, and never came to good.  记得以前那个小伙子纳特·斯旺因吧，他是当时这地方数一数二的标枪手啊，可自从他听了人家布道以后，他就完了！

He got so frightened about his plaguy soul, that he shrinked and sheered away from whales, for fear of after-claps, in case he got stove and went to Davy Jones.  他的灵魂不能再忍受残忍，看见鲸鱼就吓破了胆，他怕，怕万一出了事船沉入亡，大家都完蛋！ 

Peleg! Peleg! said Bildad, lifting his eyes and hands, thou thyself, as I myself, hast seen many a perilous³ time; thou knowest,  法勒，法勒！你别再亵渎神灵地胡说八道了，恐怕你比任何一个人都更了解对死亡的恐惧的滋味吧！比勒达挥动着手臂，开始大声反击。

Peleg, what it is to have the fear of death; how, then, can'st thou prate⁴ in this ungodly guise⁵. Thou beliest thine own heart, Peleg.  这么说话对得起你自己的良心吗？上回在日本海，三根桅杆都被台风吹到海里去了，你没有想到死神和末日吗？
