Likewise, there was a parcel of outlandish bone fish hooks on the shelf over the fire-place, and a tall harpoon² standing³ at the head of the bed. 在壁炉上面的架子上,还有一包形状古怪的骨制鱼钩,床头则倚着一支长长的标枪。

But what is this on the chest? I took it up, and held it close to the light, and felt it, and smelt⁴ it,  但是,放在柜子上的是什么东西呢?我把它拿了起来,凑着烛光,摸摸,闻闻,

and tried every way possible to arrive at some satisfactory conclusion concerning it.  想尽各种办法要对它获得一个满意的结论。

I can compare it to nothing but a large door mat, ornamented⁵ at the edges with little tinkling⁶ tags something like the stained porcupine⁷ quills⁸ round an Indian moccasin.  我只能拿一块大门毯来比拟它,它四边镶有一些叮铃当啷的小饰,有点象印第安人的鹿皮靴四周镶的五色豪猪刺。

There was a hole or slit⁹ in the middle of this mat, as you see the same in South American ponchos¹⁰.  毯子当中开了个洞或者一条缝,就象你看见的南美洲人穿的斗篷那样。

But could it be possible that any sober harpooneer would get into a door mat, and parade the streets of any Christian¹¹ town in that sort of guise¹²?  但是,任何一个神志清楚的标枪手会穿上门毯,而且以这种装束在任何一个文明的城镇招摇过市,有这种可能吗?
