 MATE'S VOICE FROM THE QUARTER-DECK 后甲板上传来大副的声音:

The squall! the squall! jump, my jollies! (They scatter¹.) 狂风来啦,狂风来啦!赶快呀,水手们!(大家都散开了)

PIP (Shrinking under the windlass) 比普(缩在绞车下面):

Jollies? Lord help such jollies! Crish, crash! there goes the jib-stay! Blang-whang! God! Duck lower, Pip, here comes the royal yard!  水手么?愿上帝赐助这些水手!吱哩克拉,三角帆架给拆掉喽!噼里啪啦!天呀!再钻低些,比普,顶上的桅帆飞过来喽!

It's worse than being in the whirled woods, the last day of the year!  这比在刮旋风的树林里还要糟,真是末日来到了!

Who'd go climbing after chestnuts² now?  现在谁敢上树采栗子呀?

But there they go, all cursing, and here I don't.  不过他们都去了,都在咒骂,我却不去。

Fine prospects³ to 'em; they're on the road to heaven.  愿他们前程远大吧,他们在走向天堂了。

Hold on hard! Jimmini, what a squall!  抓住呀!皇天呵,多大的风!

But those chaps there are worse yet-they are your white squalls, they.  但是,那些家伙还要糟呢!他们就是你的白浪暴风,他们。

White squalls? white whale, shirr! shirr!  白浪暴风么?还是白鲸,嘘!嘘!

Here have I heard all their chat just now, and the white whale-shirr! shirr!but spoken of once! and only this evening-it makes me jingle⁴ all over like my tambourine-that anaconda of an old man swore 'em in to hunt him!  他们这会儿的谈话,我在这儿都听到了,还有那白鲸...嘘!嘘!不过只说过一遍,只在今天晚上...那可叫我吓得象我的小手鼓一般,浑身当当响...那个蟒蛇似的老头子要他们发誓去追捕它呀!

Oh! thou big white God aloft there somewhere in yon darkness, have mercy on this small black boy down here; preserve him from all men that have no bowels⁵ to feel fear! 你这个躲在那边什么漆黑的地方的高高在上的白神呀,可怜可怜躲在这里的这个小黑人吧;使他别眼那些天不怕地不怕的家伙搅在一起吧!

1 scatter
