The men and women of Anglo-Saxon England normally bore one name only.

英国的安格鲁撒克逊人无论男女通常只有一个名字。

Distinguishing epithets¹ were rarely added.

有区别作用的称号很少加在他们的名字后。

These might be patronymic, descriptive or occupational.

这样的描述性词语可能源于父名，描述性词语或职业，

They were, however, hardly surnames.

但在过去这些词语很少被当作姓氏。

Heritable names gradually became general in the three centuries following the Norman Conquest in 1066.

It was not until the 13th and 14th centuries that surnames became fixed,although for many years after that,the degree of stability in family names varied² considerably³ in different parts of the country.

British surnames fall mainly into four broad categories:

patronymic, occupational, descriptive and local.

A few names, it is true, will remain puzzling:

的确，仍然有少数名字是令人费解的，

foreign names, perhaps, crudely translated,adapted or abbreviated;or artificial names.

或许是由于外国人名在翻译，改造，缩写的时候过于粗拙，也许是因为这些名字是人们另造出来的。

In fact, over fifty per cent of genuine British surnames derive⁴ from place names of different kinds,and so they belong to the last of our four main categories.

Even such a name as Simpson may belong to this last group,and not to the first,had the family once had its home in the ancient village of that name.

Otherwise, Simpson means the son of Simon,as might be expected.

Hundreds of occupational surnames are at once familiar to us,or at least recognisable after a little thought:

Archer⁵, Carter, Fisher, Mason, Thatcher⁶, Taylor,to name but a few.

Hundreds of others are more obscure in their meanings and testify to the amazing specialisation in medieval arts, crafts and functions.

All these vocational names carry with them a certain gravity and dignity,which descriptive names often lack.

Some, it is true, like Long, Short or Little, are simple.

They may be taken quite literally⁷.

Black and White implied dark and fair respectively.

Sharp meant genuinely discerning, alert, acute rather than quick-witted or clever.

Place-names have a lasting⁸ interest since there is hardly a town or village in all England that has not at some time given its name to a family.

They may be picturesque⁹, even poetical;or they may be pedestrian, even trivial.

3 considerably   

adv.极大地；相当大地；在很大程度上

• The gap has narrowed considerably.分歧大大缩小了。

4 derive   

v.取得；导出；引申；来自；源自；出自

参考例句：

• We derive our sustenance from the land.我们从土地获取食物。
• We shall derive much benefit from reading good novels.我们将从优秀小说中获得很大好处。

5 archer   

n.射手，弓箭手

参考例句：

• The archer strung his bow and aimed an arrow at the target.弓箭手拉紧弓弦将箭瞄准靶子。
• The archer's shot was a perfect bull's-eye.射手的那一箭正中靶心。

6 thatcher   

n.茅屋匠

7 literally

8 lasting   

adj.永久的，永恒的；vbl.持续，维持

9 picturesque   

adj.美丽如画的，（语言）生动的，绘声绘色的

参考例句：

• You can see the picturesque shores beside the river.在河边你可以看到景色如画的两岸。
• That was a picturesque phrase.那是一个形象化的说法。

10 relatively   

adv.比较...地，相对地

参考例句：

• The rabbit is a relatively recent introduction in Australia.兔子是相对较新引入澳大利亚的物种。
