1807Robert E. Lee, the Confederate General who surrenders spell the end of the Civil War is born in Westmoreland county, Virginia.

1966Indira Gandi is elected prime minister of India, becoming the  first woman to lead the world's most populous² democracy.

2001As he prepares to leave office, President Bill Clinton admits making false statements under oath about his relationship with former White House intern³ Monica Lewinsky. The admission is part of a deal sparing Clinton from possible indictment⁴. He also agrees to surrender his law license⁵ for five years.
