The United States and Iran are holding high-level talks, the first of their kind for nearly 30 years, in a new effort to resolve the dispute over Tehran’s nuclear programme. William Burns, a senior State Department official joined diplomats1 from other world powers for the meeting with Iran’s chief negotiator. Bethany Bell reports from Geneva where the talks are taking place.
The five permanent members of the Security Council and Germany want to hear Iran’s response to their call for Tehran to suspend its sensitive uranium enrichment work in return for a package of economic incentives2. That’s a demand that Iran has repeatedly rejected, but there have been some hints that Iran might be willing to freeze its nuclear programme at its current level in return for a freeze on new sanctions. Such a move could pave the way for talks on more direct negotiations3.
