World Cup: Germany Wins the Opening Game

The host nation, Germany, has won the opening game of the World Cup football championship. The Germans beat Costa Rica by four goals to two in Munich. In the second match, Ecuador won by two goals to nil² against Poland. Here's our sports correspondent, Harry³ Peart:

The three time world champions made a typically nervous start to the World Cup in their first competitive match for two years. While the other thirty-one teams honed their skills during the rigorous qualifying process the host country has automatic admission. The German fans were happy at overcoming the first hurdle at the start of the month-long competition. Earlier in a short opening ceremony the President of Germany, Horst Koehler, officially declared the tournament open. And as well as the traditional music and dancing there was a parade of more than a hundred and forty former World Cup winners, including Pele and Maradona.
