　　Tea is the leaf of an evergreen¹ shrub² which grows in China and Japan, and also in some parts of India.  茶叶一种灌木的叶子，这种灌木是生长在中国和日本的常青树，当然在印度的一些地方也是有的。

　　The tea plant has glossy³ green leaves and white blossoms. 茶树有光滑的绿叶和白色的花瓣。

　　At certain seasons the young leaves are gathered. They are then dried, rolled between the hands, and packed in boxes or chests. 在固定的季节，年轻的叶子被摘下，接着被干燥然后再双手中揉搓滚动，再打包金箱子或者柜子。

　　Two kinds of tea are imported into this country—black and green. 英国进口的茶叶有两种——红茶和绿茶。

　　The difference in colour isdue to different ways of drying the leaf. 茶叶的颜色不同是由于干燥的时候使用的方法不同。

　　For black tea the leaves are exposed to the open air for some time before they are roasted, and they are then dried slowly over charcoal⁴ fires. 红茶，是在烘烤前将叶子暴露在露天下一段时间，然后用木炭火慢慢烘烤。

　　For green tea the leaves are roasted quickly, almost as soon as they are gathered. 而绿茶是快速烘烤，而且几乎是将它们以摘下来就进行烘烤的。

　　When tea was first brought to England it was very costly⁵, and some of the people did not know how it should be made; 英国刚开始引进茶叶的时候，茶是很贵的，有些人并不知道它应该怎么制作。

　　so they boiled the leaves and ate them, after having thrown the liquid away! 因此，他们把叶子煮沸然后吃叶子，最后竟把茶水倒掉！

　　The Coffee plant is a shrub which resembles the laurel. 咖啡树是一种类似于月桂树的植物。

　　It has a slender stem, pointed⁶ glossy leaves, and clusters of pretty white blossoms. 它的茎很细，叶子又尖又光滑，雪白的花瓣成簇地长着。

　　When the flowers fall off, green berries are left behind. 当花脱落,绿色浆果抛在后面。

　　When the berries are ripe, they are found to contain two seeds. 当果实成熟的时候，咖啡树长成了两种种子。

　　From these seeds, when roasted and ground, we make the pleasant drink called Coffee. 对这些种子进行烘烤我们就制成了可口的咖啡啦。

　　The Coffee plant grows in Arabia, in the Southern States of North America, in Brazil, in the East and West Indies, and in Ceylon. 咖啡树生长的地区包括：阿拉伯地区，北美洲的南部，巴西，印度的东部和西部及锡兰。

1 evergreen

4 charcoal

5 costly   

adj.昂贵的，价值高的，豪华的

• It must be very costly to keep up a house like this.维修这么一幢房子一定很昂贵。

6 pointed   

adj.尖的，直截了当的
