 　　LESSON 2 Little JIM 第二课 小吉姆

　　The cottage was a thatched one, 一个茅草屋,

　　The outside old and mean; 外面又老又寒酸

　　Yet everything within that cot 然而屋内的一切

　　Was wondrous¹ neat and clean. 是多么的整洁干净。

　　The night was dark and stormy, 黑夜里暴风雨狂虐

　　The wind was howling wild; 风在咆哮;

　　A patient mother knelt beside 病人的母亲跪在旁边

　　The deathbed of her child: 她孩子的病榻上:

　　A little worn-out creature— 一个可怜的小生命-

　　His once bright eyes grown dim; 他曾经明亮的眼睛变得暗淡;

　　He was a collier's only child— 他是一个科利尔独子

　　They called him little Jim. 他们叫他吉姆。

　　And oh, to see the briny² tears 哦,看到咸的眼泪

　　Fast hurrying down her cheek, 快匆匆流过她的脸颊,

　　As she offered up a prayer in thought; 她默默祷告;

　　She was afraid to speak, 不敢说话,

　　But oh, I am so dry! 但是啊,我口干!

　　Just moisten  poor Jim's lips again; 再一次滋润可怜的吉姆的嘴唇;

　　And, mother, don't you cry. 妈妈,别哭。”

　　With gentle, trembling haste she held 她轻轻,颤抖着举起

　　The tea-cup to his lips; 茶杯贴近他的嘴唇;

　　He smiled, to thank her, as he took 他笑了,感谢她,喝了

　　Three tiny little sips⁴. 三个小口。

　　Tell father, when he comes from work, “告诉父亲,当他工作回来的时候,

　　I said good-night to him; 我对他说晚安;

　　And, mother, now I'll go to sleep— 妈妈,现在我将安息”

　　Alas⁵! poor little Jim! 唉!可怜的吉姆!

　　She saw that he was dying— 她看到他——死亡

1 wondrous
