 Lianne Smith admits killing¹ her children and has described in detail how she suffocated² them by putting plastic bags over their heads. But the jury in the Spanish city of Girona would decide whether she is criminally responsible or whether she was mentally ill. They've been shown a video recorded by police in the hotel where the children died.

        When Lianne Smith was first arrested, her arms were bandaged. Evidences of a possible suicide attempt. The court has heard the backgrounds of the killings⁴ and the family had fled Britain and lived in this Barcelona apartment when her partner Martin Smith was accused of sexually abusing a child. How, when he was tracked down and extradited, she felt her children would be taken from her and put them into a care. She checked into a hotel in the Costa Brava resort of Lloret de Mar⁵. And after hiding for 3 days, she decided⁶ to kill 5-year-old Rebecca and 11-month-old Daniel rather than to lose them to social workers. She spent a night with the bodies and following day she asked the hotel receptionist to call the police. Lianne Smith said calm in court listing the evidence, her lawyer said, she had a panic to have lost contact with reality, believing in there was a threat to the lives of her and her children. The prosecutor⁷ has called for her jail term of 38 years saying the children were totally incapable⁸ of defending themselves.
