 The move to seven day work in the NHS will be one of the government's biggest tasks of the next five years. But it says the benefits for patients are worthy¹ their pay for. And those having surgery on a Saturday are 84% more likely to die over the following month than those having the operation on a Monday. A large city NHS trust like Entry University hospital in Liverpool is calculated to need 23 extra consultants working the weekend had cost of 2.7 million pounds a year. A smaller district general like dosat country hospitaling dotrchister is likely to need an extra 8 consultants at the cost of 1.1 million pounds a year. And with a hundred and sixty eight acute hospital trust in England you can see the NHS is likely to need well over a thousand extra consultants and perhaps two hundred million pounds more every year to cover a weekend.
