The Great War, like previous conflicts, saw many members of what might be called the Irish landed gentry1 serve as officers in the British Armed Forces. This military tradition was particularly strong in and around County Cavan, which between 1914 and 1945 alone produced SiX Field Marshalls, ELEVEN Generals and SEVEN Admirals – as well as some other historic names. Two neighbours in Cavan - Lord Farnham and Sir Oliver Nugent - would find their lives entwined not just in the First World War but also in the Home Rule crisis.
