027 Parthenon sculpture: Centaur1 and Lapith 23 Feb 2010
Tue, 23 Feb 10
Sculpture of a half-man, half-horse rearing over a dead human from the Parthenon in Athens, Greece. Carved out of marble around 440BC, these beautiful figures continue to generate huge controversy2 around the world for the fact that they remain in London and have not been returned to Greece. Neil MacGregor, Director of the British Museum, acknowledges the political controversy but concentrates on their artistic3 story and the ancient Greek world that created them - a culture besotted with the myths and imagery of battle. With contributions from Greek archaeologist Olga Palagia and classicist Mary Beard.
