His illicit⁴ trip took him back to Sierra Leone. He grew up in the western African country before the civil war rejoiced it to ruin it. His father was a successful diamond merchant, passing on his passion for the glittering gems⁵ to his son.

But his blood lust⁶ for diamonds led him back to his childhood home in very different circumstances.

He was buying blood diamonds from Issa Sesay, a vicious rebel leader, who would eventually be found guilty for crimes against humanity. At the time, no foreign buyer had flown into Sierra Leone for ten years. But flying was too dangerous.
