 Most people don't expect the house cool from these beetles², but we should be thankful for their services. They can smell dead flesh from a staggering three kilometers away. When they find the corpse³, they dress it first, coating it * and oral fluids to slow down rotting and stop the smell of decaying flesh attracting unwanted attention. Each beetle¹ has an eager * in toe. Tiny mites⁴ ride along, they are after the eggs and larva of carrying flies, the beetle's competition. The female burying beetle will lay up to 30 eggs nearby and feed her young on scraps⁵ of regurgitated flesh until they are big enough to eat from the corpse themselves. 

Home, sweet home, now complete with its very own death trap and a corpse under the floor boards. The dog's not the only one keen to start supper early. By storing food, we've made life a lot simpler for some lodgers⁶, like these rice weevils. For them, * is a thing of the past, with even removed indigestible chaff⁷ for them. Under the scanning electro-microscope, their syphon like mouth, are clearly visible. They eat into rice, making holes to lay their eggs in. A female house spider has hitched⁸ a ride on the shopping, but more of her later. It's often the creatures you overlook that make the most mess.
