The Humming-Bird and the Traveller

    A traveller who had visited Asia，Africa and Europe，at length，in making his tour through America，was overcome by heat，and lay tore pose under a tree．He had scarcely begun to doze¹ when he was roused by a loud noise，of which he could not discover the cause．Looking about him，he perceived a small bird issuing forth² from the hollow of a tree，whose beautiful plumage was variegated³ like the rainbow，and whose bulk scarcely exceeded that of a cockchafer．“I sit you，little insect，who makes this loud humming noise？”exclaimed the traveller．“Yes，”replied the bird，“you need not be surprised at that，for with men，as well as animals，the 1east often makes the greatest noise．”
