The freezing cold didn’t stop the fun in Edinburgh. As every year, the city threw a great party and around 80,000 turned out to welcome the new decade.
80’s favorite madness warmed up crowds who had braved temperatures of minus six degrees. But nothing was going to stop this show, although heavy snowfall forced Inverness to cancel its celebrations.
And here in London, this is what they all come to see. Hundreds of thousands 've packed the banks of the River Thames braved the freezing cold, so they can witness this, the capital spectacular New Year’s party. The waiting crowds were rewarded with an 8-minute firework display, lighting up the clear sky over the capital.
In Berlin, The Brandenburg Gate provided the backdrop for a massive outdoor party, with more than a million people looking forward to 2010. A subtle light show the Eiffel Tower in Paris was a little more low-key, but the mood no less festive.
“...the successful and lucky life, and be healthy, that’s all.”
In Rio, around two million people packed onto the Copper Cabana Beach to welcome the New Year. And one of the first cities to celebrate was Sydney, with the firework display over the harbour.
As always, New York did it in style and with passion. During the traditional celebration at Times Square, the crystal ball fell, marking the final moments of 2009. Many hoping, though, that this new year would be better than the last.
