Americans Still on Alert in Yemen Sonja Pace Cairo 20 Jun 2001 12:23 UTC U.S. officials in Yemen say they remain on the 1)alert a day after authorities arrested up to 10 people suspected of 2)plotting an attack against the American Embassy in the capital, Sana'a. The arrests come 3)amid renewed reports of increased security 4)threats against Americans in the country. Yemeni authorities have not 5)disclosed the names of those arrested, but some reports say the men belonged to a militant Islamic group and were found in possession of explosives and maps of the U.S. Embassy in Sana'a. There have recently been reports of increased security risks for Americans in Yemen. An American team investigating last October's 6)suicide bomb attack on the 7)warship USS Cole was withdrawn from Yemen Sunday after authorities said they had uncovered a plot against them. Earlier this month, the State Department warned of increased threats against Americans and U.S. interests in Yemen. The State Department authorized some embassy staff and their families to leave the country and it urged other Americans not to visit Yemen at this time.
