[00:01.59]It was late on a bitterly cold, snowy New Year’s Eve. A poor little girl was wandering in the dark, cold streets.
[00:05.86]这是一个寒冷的除夕之夜，天正下着雪。已经很晚了。一个衣衫褴缕的小女孩独自漫无目的地走在冷清黑暗的街道上。
[00:10.14]She was bare-headed and bare-footed. She certainly had had slippers on when she left home,
[00:13.15]她赤着脚，头上什么也没戴。离开家时，她的确穿着双拖鞋。
[00:16.17]but they were not much good, for they were so huge and had last been worn by her mother.
[00:18.68]可这双鞋一点用也没有。因为它们太大了，本来是妈妈穿的。
[00:21.19]And they fell off the poor little girl’s feet when she was running across the street to avoid two carriages that were rolling rapidly by.
[00:24.89]在横穿马路时，为了躲开两辆飞驰的马车，小女孩把鞋给跑丢了。
[00:28.60]One of the shoes could not be found at all. And the other was picked up by a boy who ran off with it,
[00:31.18]一只鞋怎么也找不着。另一只被一个小男孩捡到。他拿着鞋一边跑，
[00:33.75]saying that it would do for a cradle when he had children of his own.
[00:35.53]一边说这只鞋可以给他将来的孩子们做摇篮。
[00:37.30]So the poor little girl had to go on with her little bare feet which were red and blue with the cold.
[00:40.14]因此可怜的小女孩只好赤着脚走路。脚冻得青一块，紫一块。
[00:42.97]She carried a quantity of matches in her old apron, and held a packet of them in her hand.
[00:45.98]在她破旧的围裙里，兜着许多火柴，手里还拿着一盒。
[00:48.98]Nobody had bought any of her matches during all the long day.
[00:50.96]整整一天，没有人向她买过火柴，
[00:52.95]Nobody had even given her a copper. The poor little creature was hungry and perishing with cold and she looked the picture of misery.

[01:11.18]Her little hands were almsot dead with cold. One little match would do some good.

[01:20.54]Dare she pull one out of the bundle and strike it on the wall to warm her fingers?

[01:26.02]She pulled one out. Rishhh... How it splattered, how it blazed. It burnt with a bright clear flame just like a candle when she held her hand on it.
[01:32.37]她抽出了一根。哧……火花四溅，多么明亮啊！小女孩用手围拢着火柴。明亮的火焰犹如蜡烛。
[01:38.72]It was a very curious candle, too. The little girl fancied that she was sitting in front of a big stove with polished brass feet and handles.
[01:44.69]这是只非常奇异的蜡烛。小女孩幻想着自己正坐在一个大火炉前。火炉的钢制支脚和把手闪闪发亮。
[01:50.65]There was a splendid fire blazing in it and warming her so beautifully. But what happened?
[01:54.30]里面的炉火熊熊燃烧。多么温暖，多么美妙。可是怎么了？
[01:57.94]Just as she was stretching out her feet to warm them, the blaze went out.

[02:03.06]The stove vanished and she was left sitting with the end of a burnt-out match in her hand.

[02:08.94]Again she lit another. This time she was sitting under a lovely Christmas tree.
[02:12.14]她又点燃了一根火柴。这次她坐在一株可爱的圣诞树下，
[02:15.34]It was much bigger and more beautifully decorated than the one she had seen when she peeped through the glass doors at the rich merchant’s house this very last Christmas.
[02:19.53]这颗树比她去年圣诞透过富商家的玻璃门看到的那棵还要大，装饰得还要美，
[02:23.73]Thousands of lighted candles gleamed upon its branches and colored pictures such as she had seen in the shop windows looked down to her.
[02:28.86]成千上万的蜡烛照亮着树枝。一幅幅彩图，就象她曾在橱窗里看到的一样，俯视着她。
[02:33.99]The little girl stretched out both her hands towards them, and out went the match.

[02:41.23]All the Christmas candles rose higher and higher till she saw that they were only the twinkling stars.

[02:50.00]One of them fell, and made a bright streak of light across the sky. "Someone is dying,"

[02:58.65]thought the little girl. For her own grandmother, the only person who had ever been kind to her,

[03:10.59]Now she struck another match against the wall and this time it was her grandmother who appeared in the circle of flame.
[03:14.64]小女孩又在墙上擦亮了一根火柴，这次亮光中奶奶出现了。
[03:18.69]She saw her quite clearly and distinctly, looking so gentle and happy.
[03:21.61]小女孩清清楚楚看见了慈祥、快乐的奶奶。
[03:24.54]"Grandmother!" cried the little creature, "Oh, do take me with you. I know you will vanish when the match goes out.
[03:29.75]“奶奶！”小女孩哭喊着：“带我一起走吧。我知道火柴一灭，你就会不见的。
[03:34.96]You will vanish like the warm stove, the delicious goose and the beautiful Christmas tree."
[03:37.69]就象那温暖的火炉，美味的烤鹅和美丽的圣诞树一样。“
[03:40.42]She hastily struck a whole bundle of matches because she did so long to keep her grandmother with her.
[03:43.29]小女孩急忙点燃整把的火柴，因为她多么渴望留住奶奶。
[03:46.17]The light of the matches made it as bright as day.
[03:47.88]火柴的亮光如同白昼。
[03:49.59]Grandmother had never before looked so big or so beautiful.

[03:54.76]She lifted the little girl up in her arms, and they soared in a halo of light and joy, far,

[04:01.48]far above the earth where there was no more cold, no hunger, no pain. For they were with God.
[04:05.46]飞离地球，那儿不再有寒冷，饥饿和痛苦的天堂，因为他们和上帝在一起。
[04:09.44]In the cold morning light, the poor little girl sat there in the corner between the houses,
[04:12.68]在寒冷的晨曦里，可怜的小女孩坐在屋角，
[04:15.92]with rosy cheeks and a smile on her face. Dead.
[04:18.78]脸红扑扑的，面带微笑。她死了。
