The meeting came as military 5)reinforcements took up positions in the West Bank. Army sources say the military is moving infantry and armed vehicles into the area after Palestinians fired mortar shells on a Jewish community 6)adjacent to Jerusalem.

Mr. Peres said both sides need to return to the path of peace. "I don't believe that this is a lost case," the Israeli Foreign Minister said. "We should not give up 9)in the face of the bombs and the shooting and the threats because none of us has another or a better alternative."
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, speaking in Cairo, condemned the military buildup.
Other Palestinians called the move 10)provocative, saying it could push a 11)fragile situation to the edge of an 12)explosion.
The mortar attack near Jerusalem followed an 13)assault by Israeli combat 14)helicopters that killed four Palestinians in Bethlehem, including members of the militant group Hamas.
Israel says they were planning a major terrorist attack at the Maccabiah games, a Jewish sporting event currently underway at various sites throughout the country.
