[03:35.14]and match the pictures to the numbered tasks.
[03:39.82]Scientists all over the world study the weather.
[03:44.78]They collect information about rain wind, cloud and air temperature.
[03:52.23]But scientists can't be everywhere,
[03:56.36]so sometimes they use other people, such as students,to help them.
[04:02.52]Students in many countries collect information about the weather.
[04:08.37]They do this to learn more about science.
[04:12.94]Every day, they measure the temperature of the air
[04:18.80](1)and the speed (2) and the direction (3) of the wind.
[04:23.55]They also measure how much cloud (4) there is
[04:27.99]and how many centimetres of rain(5) have fallen.
[04:32.64]When they have finished these tests,
[04:36.61]the students send their information (6) by e-mail to scientists.

[05:43.25]OK.Next,we have to look at the clouds. How cloudy is it today?
[05:51.79]Ben:The clouds are very high and thin but they cover one half of the sky
[05:59.05]Janet:One half of the sky is covered with clouds.
[06:04.12]It's not a bad day for a picnic,is it?
[06:08.67]Let's see,what's next?Oh,yes.Is it wet or dry?
[06:16.24]Ben:It's dry now but it rained last night.
[06:25.31]Janet:OK,I'll write down 'dry'.Have you measured the rain?
[06:32.44]Ben:Wait a minute!I'll look at the bottle.
[06:36.88]OK,it shows we've had two centimetres of rain since yesterday.
[06:44.24]Janet:That's a lot of rain for one night, isn't it?
[06:49.00]Ben:Yes,it is.The trees will be happy. Is there anything else?
[06:55.66]Janet:Yes,the temperature.
[06:59.81]Ben:Of course.How could I forget?
[07:03.76]Let's see,the temperature is now 19 degrees
[07:14.10]Janet:OK,that's everything.
[07:18.07]Time to go to the computer room and send an e-mail.

[08:27.48]Shen Zhan:Hi,Ben.What are you reading?
[08:31.92]Ben:A report about rubbish and other problems.
[08:36.57]This newspaper wants to know how young people feel about these things.
[08:42.81]Let's see what you think.OK?
[08:47.26]Shen Zhan:OK.
[08:49.89]Ben:I'll tell you a problem
[08:53.26]and you tell meif it makes you feel hardly worried at all,
[08:59.43]a little worried, rather worried or very worried.
[09:06.87]Here's the first problem:
[09:11.94]'People who drop rubbish in parks, streets and other places'.
[09:18.39]Shen Zhan:This is bad.
[09:23.15]People who do this don't care about the land or about other people.
[09:29.63]They are thoughtless.Write down'rather worried'.
[09:36.78]Ben:I agree.
[09:39.53]Here's the next one:'People who play music loudly or make a lot of noise,
[09:48.77]for example, with cars and other machines'.
[09:54.42]Shen Zhan:I'm not very worried about this.
[10:00.37]Write down'a little worried'.
[10:04.73]I think these people ought to think more about other people
[10:10.30]but you can put something over your ears.
[10:14.56]Ben:That's true. Now,the third one is'Factories that smell bad'.
[10:23.10]Shen Zhan:Oh,I'm hardly worried at all about smelly factories.
[10:30.86]Of course,no one wants to live next to one,but I don't,so I don't care.
[10:38.80]Ben:Is that so?I'm very surprised. You shouldn't just think about yourself!
[10:46.87]Now,how do you feel about this one:'The food that we eat'?
[10:54.32]Shen Zhan:I'm quite worried about this.
[10:57.97]We buy more and more food from stores instead of growing it ourselves.
[11:04.63]We need to know if any of this food is bad for us.
[11:09.49]Ben:Here's the next one:'The air'.
[11:14.46]Shen Zhan:I'm very worried about the air.
[11:18.22]Cars,factories and so on are putting too much dirt into our air.
[11:24.70]It's very unhealthy.Something must be done about it!
[11:30.34]Ben:OK.That was the last question.Let's send your answers to the newspaper.
[11:37.99]lesson 16
[11:41.23]exercise 4.Read about an unusual house and answer the questions.
[11:49.30]In 1918,Edward Leedskaln in was going to marry a girl named Agnes
[11:57.35]but the night before the wedding,Agnes changed her mind.
[12:02.63]Edward was so sad that he left his country and moved to the USA.
[12:09.16]In his new country,Edward started building a 'dream home'for Agnes.
[12:16.00]He didn't have much money,
[12:19.34]so he build it out of things that other people didn't want rocks.
[12:26.11]Some of the rocks that he used weighed over 25,000 kilos.
[12:32.35]To move and cut them,
[12:35.59]he used only things that people had thrown away such as old car parts.
[12:42.57]It took him 20 years to build the house,
[12:47.01]which he called Rock Gatebut he built it very, very well.
[12:53.56]Inside,there is a table that looks like a heart.
[12:58.92]It weighs more than 2,000 kilos.
[13:03.28]Outside,there is a gate that you can open with one finger,
[13:09.16]ever though it weighs more than 9,000 kilos.
[13:14.20]In 1991,a big storm destroyed all the houses near Rock Gate
[13:21.05]but it didn't hurt Rock Gate itself.
[13:25.12]No one knows how Edward did this work.
[13:29.38]He was a small man,only 1.5 metres tall and weighing 45 kilos.
[13:37.53]No one ever saw him working.
[13:41.29]He worked only at nightor when no one else was around.
[13:46.93]When visitors came to see his househe stopped and talked to them
[13:52.50]but he didn't do any work until they had left.
[13:56.47]In 1951,Edward died.
[14:01.12]He had never married and he had not seen Agnessince the night she had left him
[14:07.46]Thirty years after he died, some people found Agnes
[14:13.11]and asked her if she wanted to see the homethat Edward had built for her.
[14:18.98]She said,'No.I didn't want to marry him then
[14:24.73]and I don't want to know about him now!'
[14:28.68]Unit 4
[14:31.73]Time for a ryme The Storm
[14:37.01]A storm is going to be here soon. It's moving in our direction.

[14:51.12]Before the sun was shining. And the clouds were thin and high.
[14:57.88]But now the sun is hiding. And black clouds cover the sky.A strong wind is blowing
[15:08.15]And rain has started to fall. This weather is quite exciting.
[15:15.12]It's my favourite of all. |
