[00:11.23]page fourty-seven
[00:13.74]Joyce wanted to encourage students to read more famous books.
[00:20.24]So,in her newspaper,
[00:23.54]she printed this funny story from a book called The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
[00:29.94]by Mark Twain.Tom Sawyer Paints The Fence Saturday morning came
[00:41.33]and everything was bright and fresh.
[00:45.40]Every boy in town was happy, except Tom Sawyer.
[00:51.07]Tom stood on the sidewalk with a bucket of white paint
[00:56.66]and a brush with a long handle in his hands
[01:01.96]He looked at the fence that his aunt had told him to paint and felt very depressed
[01:10.56]It was thirty yards long and three yards high!
[01:16.96]He dipped his brush in the paint and painted a corner of the fence.
[01:23.46]Then he stood back and looked at it.
[01:28.16]The section that was painted was so small,
[01:33.05]and the unpainted section was so big!
[01:38.22]He sat down under a tree to have a rest.
[01:43.60]He began to think of all the games which he had planned for the day.
[01:50.60]Soon the boys who were free would come along and make fun of him.
[01:57.92]But just then,he had a wonderful idea.
[02:02.41]He picked up his brush and went back to work.
[02:06.90]Ben Rogers came along the road, singing happily and carrying an apple
[02:14.40]He stopped and looked at Tom.
[02:17.20]Tom went on painting and ignored Ben.'I'm going swimming,'
[02:24.69]said Ben.'Do you want to go swimming,Tom? But I guess you can't.
[02:31.88]You have to stay and work, don't you?'Tom went on painting.
[02:38.98]'Work?' he said.'This isn't work.I'm enjoying myself.
[02:45.67]Does a boy get a chance to paint a fence like this every day?'
[02:52.04]Ben thought about this.Tom went on painting,carefully.
[02:59.72]Sometimes he stopped, stood back to look at the fence,
[03:05.42]and then added a bit more paint in just the right place
[03:11.90]Ben was watching Tom's every move
[03:16.91]He was getting more and more interested. After a while
[03:24.30]he said,'Tom,will you let me do some painting?'
[03:30.70]Tom thought about it,and said,'No,Ben,I can't.You see,
[03:38.91]Aunt Polly wants it to be done properly.
[03:43.40]I'm the only one who can do it right.'Oh,please,Tom,'
[03:51.50]begged Ben.'I can do it.I'll be really careful Just let me try.
[03:59.31]I'll give you half of my apple.I'll give you all of it!'
[04:05.50]Well,all right,Ben,'said Tom.'But you must be careful.'
[04:15.11]He gave Ben his brush with worry on his face but joy in his heart
[04:23.71]He sat down again under the tree, and started to eat the apple
[04:29.40]that Ben had given him.All day,
[04:34.42]boys came to make fun,but they ended up staying to paint.
[04:41.21]When Ben got tired,Billy Fisher was waiting.
[04:46.69]He gave Tom a kite for a chance to paint.
[04:51.29]Then Johnny Miller offered him twelve marbles, and so on.
[04:57.87]By late afternoon Tom had gained all sorts of toys,
[05:04.98]and the fence had gained three coats of paint
[05:10.39]Later Aunt Polly came to look at Tom's work.
[05:15.48]She was so pleased when she saw the painted fence that she gave Tom a large cake!

[13:56.91]An extract from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
[14:02.40]Tom and Becky walked down a winding passage
[14:09.89]holding their candles high.
[14:12.98]They saw names and dates written on the wall with candle smoke
[14:18.98]by visitors to the cave before.
[14:23.29]Becky and Tom read some of them as they walked along.
[14:28.49]They were talking so much that it was a littlewhile
[14:32.88]before they noticed they were now in a part of the cave
[14:37.48]that had no writing on the wall.
[14:40.88]They used candle smoke to write their own names on the rock and walked on
[14:47.95]Soon they came to a place where a little stream of water was running
[14:54.56]Over the years the cave wall was shaped by the running stream,
[15:00.75]and it looked like a frozen waterfall.
[15:05.17]Tom went behind it and lit it up with his candle so that Becky could see it better
[15:13.16]Behind the stone waterfall he found an opening in the rock
[15:19.07]leading downwards. At once he wanted to explore it
[15:24.97]Becky agreed and together they started to walk down into the earth
[15:31.97]They wound this way and that, far into the cave
[15:37.85]making smoke marks here and there to show the way back
[15:43.44]This was exciting. They would have a lot to tell their friends above
[15:49.03]when they returned.In one place,they found a huge,
[15:55.04]open space full of shining stalactites
[16:00.44]as long and thick as a man's leg. They walked around it
[16:06.74]and left by one of the many passages that opened into it
[16:11.83]The next place they found was full of bats
[16:16.64]There were thousands of them.
[16:20.04]The candlelight woke them up,and they flew at the candle flames at once
[16:26.65]Tom knew this was dangerous and took Becky's hand to hurry her away
[16:33.33]He pulled her into the first opening he found And not too soon
[16:40.65]one of the bats struck Becky's candle out with its wings
[16:46.52]The bats chased them for quite a long way,
[16:51.62]but they ran into every new passage that they came to
[16:56.92]and at last got away from the bats.
