[00:11.06]The RACE to the POLE
[00:13.47]On 1 June, 1910,
[00:16.16]Captain Scott left London to begin his journey
[00:19.62]to the Antarctic.
[00:21.04]On his way, he received a message
[00:23.36]from the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen:
[00:26.82]"I'm going South." So the race to the South
[00:30.75]Pole was on!
[00:32.51]During the polar summer of 1910-1911,
[00:36.47]both teams organized food bases
[00:39.10]in preparation for their journeys the next year
[00:42.52]Then came the total darkness
[00:44.55]of the polar winter.
[00:46.26]Scott and Amundsen waited anxiously for spring.
[00:50.50]Amundsen was the first to leave,
[00:52.85]on 15 October, 1911.
[00:55.83]He had teams of dogs pulling the sledges
[00:58.59]and all his men were on skis.
[01:01.20]Because of this, he made rapid progress.
[01:04.85]Scott left on 1 November
[01:07.03]and soon had problems.
[01:08.81]First, his two sledges broke down,
[01:11.49]and then the horses begs to have serious
[01:13.95]difficulties with the snow and the cold.
[01:17.30]After a while,Scott and his men
[01:19.97]had to push the sledges themselves.
