The Obama administration has unveiled a plan to reduce the role of nuclear weapons as part of its national security strategy. The government is promising not to launch a nuclear attack on non-nuclear states and says it sends a message to Iran and North Korea.
"If you’re not going to play by the rules, if you're going to be a proliferator, then all options are on the table in terms of how we deal with (you)." (President) Barack Obama travels to Prague tomorrow to sign a new arms reduction treaty with Russia.
Back home, and salvage crews are preparing to contain oil leaking from a Chinese ship onto the Great Barrier Reef. The massive coal carrier hit a protected part of the reef off the central Queensland coast on Saturday. Authorities will today try and remove almost 1000 tonnes of fuel oil on board.
The Christmas Island detention centre is again operating beyond its official capacity. Sixty-three asylum seekers arrived at the island late yesterday, several days after their boat was intercepted. The Immigration Department is preparing to fly more people off the island this week.
And briefly overseas, the Indian government is reeling after more than 75 police were killed in an attack by Maoist rebels. Their patrol was ambushed in the central state of Chhattisgarh. Reinforcements have been sent in to collect the dead and injured.
