And the consumer group Choice says it's still concerned about a lack of competition in the supermarket sector. Coles has been cleared of anti-competitive behavior for slashing its home brand milk prices. The consumer watchdog says consumers are benefiting from the move, but Choice is calling for greater scrutiny. The findings from a Senate inquiry into the milk campaign are due to be handed down in October. Greece's finance minister has expressed great relief in the wake of a second European bailout package. Eurozone countries have pledged Greece a package worth $145 billion, but the Greek prime minister says still a lot of work needs to be done with unpopular cost-cutting measures starting next year. Greek shares jumped on the opening with the benchmark index up almost 3.5 per cent.
The Greek rescue deal also helped push up local markets. The All Ords and the ASX 200 jumped just over 1 per cent. Asian markets also made sharp gains. Japan's Nikkei closed 122 points higher. And in the US, markets were mixed, the Dow Jones is down 43 points. And on the currency market, the Australian dollar is currently around 107 or 108 US cents. |
