A man will face a Brisbane court today charged with the murder of Queensland schoolboy Daniel Morcombe. Police are continuing to search rugged bushland near the Glass House Mountains for his body. The boy disappeared almost eight years ago while waiting for a bus on the Sunshine Coast. A new survey by the Australian Council of Social Services has shown a big jump in the number of Australians asking welfare groups for help. Twelve per cent more people sought help in the last year, but many groups are still struggling to cope with the increased demands. One in 20 people had to be turned away. Two Australian soldiers have been injured in a roadside blast in Afghanistan. The attack happened during a routine patrol in Uruzgan province. One of them has been flown to a German hospital in a serious condition and 22 people have died and dozens have been injured after militants attacked a governor’s compound in the central province of Parwan. A bomb blast at a roadside restaurant in south-west Pakistan has killed at least 11 people. Authorities say about 40 people were in the two-storey building when the bomb exploded and they fear many people are still trapped in the rubble. And Libya’s rebels have raised their flag in the strategic western city of Zawiya. It’s the most dramatic advance in the war in several months. Fighting is still continuing in the town, but rebels claim to have gained the upper hand. Zawiya is just 50 kilometres from Tripoli and is on a main supply route to the capital. |
