Dutch police said the pilot was arrested in the cockpit.
He is suspected of flying with a forged licence for more than a decade.
The police said he had once had a commercial pilot licence but it had expired and it never qualified him for passenger flights.
He claimed to have worked for various companies in Belgium, Britain and Italy for over 13 years, logging more than 10,000 flight hours.
The Turkish airline Corendon said the pilot had worked for the company for two years and Corendon had cooperated with police and had a reserve pilot prepared to take over the flight.
When he was arrested, the pilot said he was relieved that his misdeeds had come to light and he tore the captain's stripes off his uniform.
