German President calls on Merkel to explain euro crisis(在线收听) |
BERLIN, July 8 (Xinhua) -- German President Joachim Gauck on Saturday asked Chancellor Angela Merkel to explain in detail why the eurozone's largest economy needs to save its troubling partners. In an interview with German television ZDF, Gauck said Merkel must give German citizens a more clarified explaination on the necessity to dissolve the gnawing eurozone sovereign debt crisis.
"She now has the obligation to describe in great detail, what this means, also means fiscally," Gauck said.
"Sometimes it is difficult to explain what is at stake. And sometimes there is a lack of motivation and effort to explain to the people what is actually happening," the president said, while offering to help in the process of communicating those priorities.
In the meantime, Gauck said he held the work of the Chancellor with great respect, saying "what she had done and now is doing come beyond my capacity."Commenting on the European Union leaders' summit in Brussels last week, Gauck said the outcome of the meeting was not too negative from a German perspective.
"Rarely could a whole page be put through during any negotiation and dispute, while the talks on the financial crisis would need compromises." Gauke said. |
