　　The Guardian newspaper in London today revealed its source for stories about the US government’s surveillance programs. It posted an interview with a man on its website. He identified himself as Edward Snowden, aged 29, who worked as a government contractor in the National Security Agency in Hawaii. He said he decided to reveal the programs because he thought the government was doing something wrong.

　　The Guardian story detailed how the US is collecting telephone records of millions of Americans, although not actual conversations. It's also been revealed the NSA is tapping into the servers of major US Internet companies, such as Google, Apple, Microsoft and Facebook. The Director of National Intelligence James Clapper has called the exposures reckless.

　　A fifth person is reported dead in the aftermath of Friday's mass shooting in Santa Monica, California. NPR's Sam Sanders reports.

　　In a statement posted to the school's website, Santa Monica College says Marcela Franco passed away Sunday morning. She's a daughter of Carlos Franco, an employee of the college, who was also killed by the gunman. The two were together in a SUV when they were shot. Marcela Franco, who was 26, was registered for summer classes at Santa Monica College. The school has established a memorial fund honoring the Franco family. Police say the first two victims in the shooting spree were related to the gunman. They have not officially identified the suspect, though several media outlets have released the name. 　　Jury selection begins tomorrow in Sanford, Florida in the George Zimmerman trial. He's charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. His lawyers are claiming self-defence. If convicted, Zimmerman could be sentenced to life in prison.

　　Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is warning anti-government demonstrators they should stop their protests. Police, meanwhile, have again fired tear gas into a crowd of at least 10,000 gathered in Ankara. The BBC's Mark Lowen reports.

　　Here in Taksim Square, there’s been one of the largest demonstrations since this unrest began over a week ago. Thousands came for concerts and speeches, chanting for the prime minister to resign. But Recep Tayyip Erdogan has rallied his troops too. He told his supporters in Ankara that his patience was running out. The protesters were “looters” and “marginal elements”, warning them: “You have started this fight against us, you will pay the price very heavily.” While the prime minister has lost control of central Istanbul, his supporters now plan large rallies in the days to come.

　　Representatives from North Korea and South Korea met today for the first time in more than two years. The meeting took place in the village along the heavily armed border, the same place where the truce ending the Korean War was signed in 1953. The purpose today was to set up more talks at the ministerial level.

　　A man who allegedly set fire to a crowded bus in southeastern China last week was angry because officials had denied him social security benefits. That’s according to Chinese microblog posts and the man's brother. NPR's Frank Langfitt reports the fire killed 47 people. It's one of the worst attacks of its kind in China.

　　According to Internet postings under the name of the alleged attacker Chen Shuizong, he was denied benefits after local police refused to correct an error on his household registration paperwork. Chen's brother told the newspaper Southern Metropolis Chen had petitioned the local government many times to fix his paperwork to no avail. When Chinese feel wrong, they can petition officials for redress. In truth, their problems are rarely solved, and their frustration can boil over into violence. Two years ago, a farmer bombed government buildings in southeastern China after officials knocked down his home for a highway. At least two people died and six were injured in those bombings. 　　Former South African President Nelson Mandela is spending a second day in a Pretoria hospital. He's being treated for a lung infection. This is his fourth hospital stay since December. Mandela’s 94. His doctors says he's susceptible to respiratory problems because he contracted tuberculosis during his 27 years in prison while fighting against apartheid in South Africa.
