His father was a coach, and he took his son to the training hall from the age of three. "There was nothing really of good fun in the training hall but loads of balls that I could play with. That huge hall to me was like a maze of some kind." At the age of six he decided for himself that he wanted to play. By the time he was in primary school he was addicted to table tennis.
