1. The US House passed a funding measure Friday to try and avert a government shutdown. The bill also blocks President Obama’s healthcare law. The Senate promises to strip that provision and pass a straight funding measure itself. 2. Pope Francis offered an olive branch and sorts to conservative catholics. He denounced abortion as part of today’s “throw-away culture”, encouraging doctors not to perform them. Yesterday, the Pope blasted the church’s focuses on strict rules that could drive away the faithful.
3. Al-Qaeda attacked 3 security and military posts with car bombings in southern Yemen, killing 38 soldiers. It was the group’s biggest attack in the country since the last year.
4. Medal of honour recipients gathered in Gettysburg for an annual convention to remember fallen US service members. The group also met with students to teach them about honour and courage in life and the battlefield.
