Transit workers unions in the Sanfrancisco bay area say they will walk off their job at mid night after marathon bargaining session failed to produce a settlement in their 4 month long labour dispute.NPR's Risgan reports. Representatives for 2 unions have been negotiating with officials of the bay area rapid transit system for near 29 hours,but progress of the talks staled and union spokes woamn said workers were prepared to strike if a last minute deal isn't reached.But unions have been posed for a strike since sunday when a 60 day cooling off period expired.Since then the 2 sides negotiated and the unions have drawn back several strike threats.Baker carries about 200,000 communtors every work day,it's the fifth largest urban transit system in the nation.Richad Congsalas,NPR News,Sanfrancisco.
As thousands of federal workers went back to work today after the costly 16 day government shutdown,president Obama called on politicians to change the way Washington does business.NPR's Scotte reports the president says he is hoping for more cooperation.
President Obama says there were no winner in the government shutdown which weaken America's economy and its international standing,he says he hopes the shutdown reminde people of the important work that government employees do.Now those workers are back on the job,Obama hopes to refocus on other priorities and he says he looks for areas of agreement between Democrats and Republicans.
