1. Extended jobless benefits are coming to an end for some 1.3 million Americans. The Obama Administration and Congressional Democrats want to continue the program but the extensions were dropped from a budget deal earlier this month. 2. A fire on an express train in southern India has killed at least 26 people, including two children. Many of those who died became trapped and suffocated when the doors of the coach failed to open. 3. A Chinese icebreaker that was enroute to rescue a ship trapped in Antarctic ice was forced to turn back when it couldn't push its way through the heavy sea ice. The Chinese vessel is waiting for a second icebreaker to help it get to a Russian ship that got stuck in the ice several days ago.
4. A giant paper shredder and a dumpster have been installed in Times Square to allow visitors to destroy bad memories of 2013. The annual event is dubbed good riddance day. |
