The Catholic church was a spiritual entity, but it was  always also a governing entity and a economic entity.

But that isn't all. 

Not only were the clergy, and bishops and popes involved  in taxation of prostitution, and in the running of the brothels, they also were the clients themselves. Most of the church fathers of any status had absolutely no interest in the celibacy, and to appease the powerful, it was necessary to supply them with regular sexual activity. In fact, at one point, 20 percent of all the people who visited the prostitutes were from the clergy.

  Experts estimated that for nearly a thousand years the men upstairs and the ladies of a night were co-workers. But that all changed in the early 16 century when the prostitute reformation  called the catholic church sexy sidelines into question.

When Henry the Eighth forced the separation of the church of England from Rome, the Catholic church re-examined its ways and closed shop on the Brothels. While prostitution was no longer good for PR, it certainly helped  fund the church's rise to power. It just goes to show you never know where you'll find sex for sale.
