China's railway authorities say more than ten million trips by train were made by travellers on Thursday, the first day of the three-day Labor Day holiday. This figure is around twenty percent higher that the same time last year, making it a record high. To cope with the increased volume of passengers, 346 temporary trains were added to take people to sightseeing venues and back home.
According to 12306, the hotline system for train tickets bookings and sales, the route from Beijing to Tianjin was the busiest during the three-day holiday. In second and third places are the routes from Tianjin to Beijing and Shanghai to Hangzhou. On Saturday, the last day of the short break, Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou also saw increasing traffic on roads leading into the city.
Meanwhile, a growing number of people also chose foreign trips as their May Day holiday option.
